The Hon. Robert Macfarlan KC
The Hon Robert Macfarlan KC was a judge of the New South Wales Court of Appeal from September 2008 until his retirement in February 2023. In that capacity he was involved in making 1500 decisions. He wrote the principal judgment in about one-third of these cases, which were mainly appeals from judicial officers and other decision-makers from various courts and tribunals including the Supreme Court of NSW, District Court and the Land and Environment Court.
The subject matter of the cases was diverse, including commercial, land and environment, administrative and personal injury claims, as well as defamation, equity and deceased estate issues. Rob was also regularly the presiding judge on the NSW Court of Criminal Appeal.
Prior to his appointment to the Court of Appeal Rob practised as a barrister for 32 years, principally in the commercial and equity fields. He was admitted to the Bar in 1976 and was appointed silk in 1986. He was a member of Eleven Wentworth Chambers from 1977.
He is available to conduct mediations.
