READERSHIP INFORMATION SESSION
Eleven Wentworth will be hosting a Readership Information Session on 10th October 2023 at 5.15pm, for those considering applying for readership positions commencing in 2025. More information is available here
Readership
Eleven Wentworth generally offers two readership positions each year. The floor usually seeks to appoint two readers for each May intake and will occasionally appoint one reader for the September intake.
What we are looking for: We receive a large number of high-quality applications every year. Readers are selected on the basis of their potential to be an outstanding barrister and colleague. Successful applicants typically have excellent academic results, some experience in commercial or government legal practice and strong professional references. Many have worked as a judge’s associate or tipstaff and have postgraduate qualifications in law.
What you are looking for: We recognise that applicants have a choice of chambers. Apart from our market-leading position as a chambers whose members practise at the highest levels in both commercial and public law, we pride ourselves on maintaining a friendly and supportive environment for new barristers. This is reflected in formal policies on parental leave and appropriate workplace behaviour as well as our reputation for mentoring junior barristers so that they can reach their professional potential. Eleven Wentworth maintains a small annex where readers may continue their relationship with the Floor as licensees following their readership year. Many readers progress to become members of the Floor.
Application process
Applications for readership will be treated in confidence and should be submitted by email to the Clerk, Zach Rymer, at clerk@elevenwentworth.com.
Your application should comprise a brief covering letter, curriculum vitae and university transcripts. You are encouraged to include contact details for professional referees we may contact about your application.
Applications should be submitted no later than 20 January in the year before you wish to commence reading. This is a guide only and applications may be considered at other times. A shortlist of applicants will be interviewed in early February.
Successful applicants are encouraged to read with a Floor member and another barrister in other chambers. It is generally desirable, but not essential, that applicants have made contact with a prospective tutor on the Floor in advance of applying for readership.
General enquiries about readership on Eleven Wentworth should be directed to the Clerk.
