Background
Melita has a broad commercial and public law practice. She has appeared unled and led in courts, tribunals and arbitrations around Australia.
Melita’s commercial practice includes large, complex disputes relating to mining, infrastructure and telecommunications projects, including insolvency and insurance matters, and has represented INPEX, Aurizon, Lendlease, CPB Contractors, John Holland, Hancock Prospecting, Optus, Transport for NSW, Administrators and PE firms. In her public law practice, Melita is briefed in proceedings involving Commonwealth and State regulators including the ACCC, ICAC, NSW EPA, NICC, ACMA and NOPSEMA. She has particular experience with sensitive, political matters including representing the proponent in the successful challenge to former Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s decision about PEP-11, the State of NSW in proceedings regarding the Narrabri Gas Project and the Department of Defence in the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide.
Melita was admitted to practice in 2015. Before coming to the Bar, she was a Senior Lawyer in the Dispute Resolution Group of the Australian Government Solicitor. After completing a Master of Laws at London School of Economics and Political Science with Distinction in 2020, Melita worked as a Legal Officer for the UK Government advising on matters arising from Brexit and the COVID-19 pandemic. She previously worked as the Research Associate to the then Hon. Justice Beech and Hon. Justice Simmonds of the Supreme Court of Western Australia.
